Kava Information

Kava, scientifically known as Piper methysticum, is a traditional drink of Fiji, made from the crushed root of the kava plant strained with water. The literal meaning of its name is "intoxicating pepper." The kava plant is propagated through cuttings and takes 3 to 4 years to develop and harvest, after which the roots are sun-dried and crushed into fine powder. It has a mildly narcotic and sedative taste which leaves a pleasant, numb feeling around the mouth, lips and tongue. Kava is traditionally  served  in a large bowl and is used in ceremonial social events, most notably to welcome guests and commemorate significant occasions.

Today, kava has shifted from the conventional, traditional ceremonial drink to a more sociable drink, to unwind from a stressful day. It has become a popular beverage, not only in the Pacific region, but also around the globe.
